Voter Registration Information for New Jersey




VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE

Must register to vote at least 21 days before the next election.

QUALIFICATIONS

To register to vote in the state of New Jersey, an individual must meet the following qualifications:
• Be a United States citizen
• Be at least 18 years old by the next election
• Be a resident of the county for at least 30 days before the election
• Not be serving a sentence or on parole or probation, as a result of a conviction of an indictable offense under state or federal law
• Not have been adjudged mentally incompetent

Note: If you are no longer serving a sentence, or are on parole or probation because of a felony conviction, you can vote in New Jersey by completing a voter registration form.

OBTAINING A VOTER REGISTRATION FORM

Applications for registration can be obtained from: the Division of Elections, the Commissioners of Registration office in the county where you live, or from your Municipal Clerk. Registration forms are also available in various State agencies and at Division of Motor Vehicle offices.

Who Can Vote By Mail in New Jersey?

In New Jersey, any voter can now vote by mail for any election. A voter may apply for a Vote By Mail Ballot by completing an Application for Vote By Mail Ballot, and mailing the application to their County Clerk up to seven days prior to the election.

How Can I Acquire an Vote By Mail Ballot?

Voters can apply in person for an Vote By Mail Ballot at the County Clerk's office until 3 p.m., the day before the election. (contact information).

A voter may apply for a Vote By Mail Ballot by completing an Application for Vote By Mail, available online:

The application can be returned by mail up to seven days prior to the election.

How do I Return the Vote By Mail Ballot and What is the Deadline?

Vote By Mail Ballots may be returned to the County Board of Elections either in person or by mail. In order to be counted, the completed Vote By Mail Ballot must be received no later than 8 p.m. (close of the polls) the day of the election.
