The Birmingham News - Baxley Holds Own Rally on Day of Bush Visit

Says low-cost affair contrasts with rival's

By MIKE CASON
News staff writer

About 100 sign-waving, sticker-wearing supporters greeted Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley at a Thursday afternoon rally in downtown Birmingham, an event she said showed the differences between her and Gov. Bob Riley.

While Riley welcomed President Bush for a private fund-raiser, Baxley's campaign served free hot dogs, chips and soft drinks to supporters and anyone else enjoying a breezy afternoon at Linn Park.

"This is a contrast between the two people as well as a contrast with the campaigns," Baxley said. "I am for the people who don't have the big money. He's the candidate for the rich and powerful who can shell out big dollars."

Baxley's campaign staff tied two life-sized cardboard cutouts of Bush to trees so people could pose, free of charge, with the president's likeness.

Earlier on Thursday, Riley supporters paid to pose with Bush at the fund-raiser at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.

LaWanda Waters, 22, wore an "I Love Lucy" sticker on her forehead and had no plans to pose with the cardboard Bush. Waters was pleased by Baxley's response to the Bush visit.

"She's showing that, just because the president came today, she's still going to fight," Waters said.

Baxley complained about the cost of Bush's visit to taxpayers. Besides helping Riley, the president also appeared in Hoover to tout that city's use of ethanol as an alternative fuel.

"So these friends of mine here shared in the cost of bringing the president here to raise money for my opponent," Baxley said.

That official business meant Riley's campaign paid for only a portion of the president's trip.
