Official Title of Legislation:

A Bill to amend and reenact ยง 22.1-79.3 of the Code of Virginia, relating to local school board policies regarding certain activities.

Official Synopsis:

Requires that local school boards either provide notice and an opportunity for parents or legal guardians to opt their children out of participation in any school-sponsored club or organization or require the prior express written permission of parents or legal guardians to be filed with the school before any student may be a member of a school-sponsored club. This bill incorporates HB 3047 (Cole).

Highlights:

- Requires parental notification when a student joins a school club of that club's name, mission, purpose, faculty sponsors, activities, dues, and their associations with other organizations [sec. 1 (E-1)].

- Allows parents to opt their children out of participation [sec. 1 (E-2)].
