Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

Project Vote Smart's Synopsis: Vote to pass a bill that allows same-sex couples to marry with equal protection under the law with different-sex couples, and excuses members of the clergy from being required to perform marriage ceremonies.
Official Title of Legislation: A 7732: An act to amend the domestic relations law, in relation to the ability to marry.
Official Synopsis: This bill provides same-sex couples the same opportunity to enter into civil marriages as opposite-sex couples. The bill also provides that no member of the clergy may be compelled to perform any marriage ceremony.
Highlights: -Recognizes marriages regardless of sex, and grants same-sex couples the same protections, responsibilities, rights, obligations, and benefits possessed by different-sex couples (Sec. 1).
-Provides that no marriage license shall be denied on account of the sex of the parties involved (Sec. 3).
-Establishes that clergymen, ministers and Society for Ethical Culture leaders shall not be required to solemnize any marriage (Sec. 4).
